In December 2023, it was announced that the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) would be delayed to 2029 from 2028. The REF is a cyclical evaluation of the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

Since 2014, the REF has included an impact component, requiring universities across the UK to demonstrate the impact of their research on areas such as the economy, the environment, society and culture. This increased in weighting from 20% in 2014 to 25% in 2021 and 2029. hivve’s team of impact experts has been working with UK universities to support their REF submissions since the 2014 iteration, and we are excited for this opportunity to share some of our learnings and best practices for managing impact in the REF cycle.

This free webinar series is aimed at UK academics who want to get to grips with research impact in general, what the REF requirements are, and how they can begin preparing to ensure maximum success and minimal stress for the 2029 assessment.

Each webinar lasts for 35 minutes, with 10 additional minutes for questions and answers. These sessions are drawn together from over a decade of experience working closely with academia through workshops and direct training to understand the optimal approach in developing impact knowledge.

Laura Tucker, CEO, hivve

Laura Tucker founded hivve (formerly Vertigo Ventures) in 2009 to address the growing need for universities and research institutions to be able to demonstrate the impact of their work.

Since then she has spearheaded the company’s international expansion, helping cross-disciplinary stakeholders from Europe through Asia to Oceania to better understand, collaborate on and showcase their research impact.

Laura has worked closely with hivve’s customers to support them during impact assessments, helping develop Impact Case Studies (ICS) in REF 2014 and 2021 in the UK and RAE 2020 and 2026 in Hong Kong. She helped develop the methodology behind the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings and sits on its advisory board.

Laura is a regular speaker and published author on the subject of research impact and continues to work closely with policy makers and customers to help maximise the social, economic and environmental impact of their work. She also has considerable experience in hands-on training UK universities in research impact.
